When Chanel Lacroix took her first maternity leave at Evolugen, she feared she might miss out on opportunities for advancement at the Gatineau-based renewable energy company. Instead, she was promoted while on vacation.
"It shows that the hiatus didn't impact my career and that they believed in me and knew I would come back," she says.
Lacroix had numerous advancement opportunities during her seven years at Evolugen, including a mentoring program for new hires that allowed her to work with different teams. "It's really helped me understand the business and grow my career," says Lacroix, who started as an analyst and is now a partnerships and external relations manager.
"It's a very dynamic environment," she adds. "I have the opportunity to work with so many people and work on so many projects that the days are never the same and I love that." We also have an open workspace where the CEO and leadership team interact with everyone sit with others and it's easy to talk to them if I have a question or want to share something."
Jonathan Lee, vice president of human resources at Evolugen, believes that the company's vibrant culture is due to its forward-thinking nature.
"We're one of the largest owners and operators of renewable energy assets in Canada, and we're always trying to innovate and look at problems in new ways, which is exciting," he says. “We try to bring that entrepreneurial spirit to all of our employees and give them the opportunity to experiment, play and find out how to do things differently.”
During the worst of the pandemic, most employees worked from home, except for those on the company's trading floor to keep track of ever-changing energy prices and demands across the country. But Lacroix says Evolugen's flexible schedules meant working remotely wasn't much of a challenge.
"We have always had the trust of our superiors," she says, "and the understanding that it can sometimes be difficult to reconcile work and private life."
"People can only do their best work when they can really be themselves," says Lee. “So one of our big areas of focus has been making sure people are doing well through the pandemic. We are blessed to have so many bright and creative people who are genuinely committed to the organization's mission. Our success is due to our people, so our priority is to take care of them.”
In addition to leadership training and flexible working hours, Evolugen offers its employees a generous benefits package that includes healthcare and mental health services, as well as a volunteer program, extensive sports and fitness programs and even ice cream days.
"The benefits are amazing," says Lacroix. “We have competitive wages, bonuses, and a pension plan, and in the office we have a gym, bike storage, nice showers, and free boot camp, yoga, and spinning classes. It makes everyday life more interesting.”
Lacroix also appreciates the company's new energy-efficient building, which offers expansive views of the Ottawa River and the Houses of Parliament. "The office is so nice that coming here makes your day a lot easier," she says. “On the third floor terrace we have a community garden where people work voluntarily. And we donate the vegetables we grow to a non-profit organization, which is pretty awesome.”

If your company offers sustainable energy solutions, it makes sense to work in a building that is as energy efficient as possible. So it's no surprise that Evolugen's headquarters in Gatineau, Que. resident renewable energy company, sets a high standard for environmental innovation.
Evolugen employees work in a LEED certified building overlooking the Ottawa River and the State Houses of Parliament. "It's beautiful, with lots of natural light and a breathtaking view," says Emily Zhang, senior sustainability analyst on Evolugen's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) team.
The company's ESG program examines its strategy and performance in the areas of climate change, biodiversity, water management, community relations, relations with indigenous peoples and health and safety. "It's a dream job for me," says Zhang. “We support the transition of other companies to a more sustainable, lower-carbon future and are also working to improve our own performance. We have been climate neutral since 2020.”
Evolugen has environmental and social committees to engage employees and encourage them to work together to improve its environmental performance, and a wellness program that offers on-site yoga and fitness classes. There's even a roof garden where Evolugen employees grow fruit and vegetables that are harvested and donated to a nearby nursery.
Zhang appreciates the support Evolugen's management is giving to the ESG program. “The ESG team includes our top leaders and we meet quarterly to update our goals and discuss any challenges,” she says. "And we're exploring things like hydrogen and battery storage to support the transition of the entire industry, not just ours."
According to Jonathan Lee, Vice President of Human Resources, it is important to apply the same sustainability principles at Evolugen, from large energy projects in other provinces to coffee machines in the office.
“Nowadays everyone wants to know where their coffee comes from, and the same goes for electricity,” he says. “People want to know: is it green? What drives it? Where do our solar panels come from and how are they built?”
That is why the company conducts extensive research and discussions to find the most environmentally friendly and innovative solutions - for itself and its customers. “There's a lot of internal reflection in everything we do,” says Lee, “whether it's as simple as not using single-use cups or plastic in the cafeteria, or bigger things like our fleet vehicles that we're converting to hybrid or electric vehicles. “ the technology exists. We find out what else we can do and challenge ourselves.”
"We have incorporated biodiversity principles into our decision-making," Zhang adds. “We want to make sure that when we build new sites or new developments, we can avoid and mitigate risks. We work with partners to plant trees, support environmental initiatives, and develop science-based solutions to climate-related problems. This is really important and applies throughout the company. From operations to office administration, everything is coordinated.”
Lee believes this approach leads to a culture that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship. "Ultimately, we're solving problems we didn't even know existed and challenges we didn't even think of," he says. “The culture is very collaborative and we spend so much time innovating and looking at problems from different angles. It is exciting."
