The term "stock exchange" refers to a marketplace where shares in a company or organization can be traded. This question is somewhat broad, however, as it can be interpreted in terms of how many public companies are in operation, how many stock tickers there are, or even how many stocks exist. In any case, the number is growing. For example,Apollo Global Management, Inc(NYSE: APO ) is 1 company but has 3 tradable tickers on the NYSE (APO, APO-A and APO-B), each with a different number of shares outstanding (235.53, 11 and 12 million respectively). in August 2021). See how fast that number has grown, from 1 company to 3 tickers to 258 million shares?

How many shares are there?
A large number of publicly traded companies are traded around the world, and there are an even larger number of tradable tickers representing different types of stocks. The 3 largest exchanges by market cap, NYSE, Nasdaq and Shanghai Stock Exchange have 7,754, 4,448 and 2,014 tradable names respectively as of August 2021. Surprisingly, however, data fromTo the petrolshows a grand total of 5,866. This discrepancy occurs because some companies may have multiple ticker symbols, like Apollo in the example above. These alternate ticker symbols distinguish the different stocks that a company may have issued. For example,Ashford Hospitality Trust(NYSE: AHT) trades its common stock under the ticker symbol AHT, but the company has also issued several preferred stocks that trade on the AHT-D.
How much money is in the stock market?
The value of the stock market doubles the combined gross domestic product (GDP) of the world's 10 largest countries by GDP. Over 60 exchanges operate worldwide, 21 of which are worth over $1 trillion, accounting for over 90% of the total global market capitalization as of August 2021. In total, the world's stock exchanges are worth over $110 trillion. That's enough money to give almost $1,400 to every person on earth.
Diversity increases safety
You may have heard of a general investment strategy called "buying the market." But what does this concept mean? Does buying the market mean you allocate a portion of your portfolio to each publicly traded company? While this would give you a highly diversified portfolio, there are better alternatives.
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)
In short, aETFis a basket of stocks and bonds that can be highly diversified across the broader market or sector. Consider an investmentETFs, which tend to have low volatility and are expected to appreciate slightly in value over time.
Investment funds
Similar to ETFsInvestment fundsare also diversified, containing a basket of stocks and bonds. The difference lies in how they are managed. Mutual funds tend to be more actively managed and therefore come with higher fees. In addition, mutual fund prices do not change during the day.Investment fundsare another way to participate in the stock market.
Are All Diversified Portfolios Safe?
No portfolio is ever completely safe and as such there are risks involved in investing in stock markets. Investing in a variety of companies and industries can help ensure you don't overweight your portfolio in a single stock, industry, sector, or geographic region. A non-diversified group of stocks will make your portfolio more responsive to negative news that may affect any stock or industry in which you are involved.
A company has no limit on the number of shares it can issue (so long as the current shareholders and all other voting members agree to the issue); However, no company has an infinite number of shares. For example,Apple Inc.(NASDAQ: AAPL) has 16.53 billion shares outstanding. That means the maximum number of shares that can be bought or sold at one time is 16.53 billion unless Apple issues more shares.
What if your shares have low liquidity?
Low-liquidity stocks may be more difficult to buy or sell and have more erratic price charts because prices don't change as smoothly as higher-liquidity stocks.
How do you find high liquidity?
There are 3 metrics you can look for when assessing a stock's liquidity. The average trading volume of a stock indicates how often stocks are traded on a given day. In addition, the total number of outstanding shares shows how many shares are available for trading. For both metrics, the higher the number, the better.
Finally, look at the percentage of shares held by institutions. The trading habits of institutional investors differ from those of retail traders because their positions can affect a stock's share price more than non-institutional investors. Some studies have found that greater institutional ownership tends to result in increased liquidity in a stock.
Why are there fewer traded companies today than there used to be?
Despite a rapidly growing economy, the number of public companies has declined since peaking at around 8,000 in the 1990s. Since 2016, when the number of public companies on US stock exchanges fell to around 3,500, the number has recovered to almost 6,000.
The stock markets in the 1990s were dominated by internet, technology and media companies that benefited from the dot-com bubble. After that bubble burst, many companies went bankrupt and were subsequently delisted.Initial Public Offerings (IPOs)have slowed since the 1990s. For example, in 1996, 848 companies went public, raising $78.6 billion. In contrast, in 2020 Dealogic reported that 454 companies went through the IPO process and raised $167.2 billion. While the number of IPOs has declined since then, the amount of money companies are raising far exceeds the increases seen in the 1990s. It is important to note that IPO activity has increased recently with 2020 being the year of theSpecial purpose entities (SPACs).
Finally, M&A activity is increasing. Increased M&A activity means fewer companies to trade publicly. When a public company is acquired or merged with another company, its ticker symbol is delisted. $2.4 trillion in transactions were completed in the first half of 2021, putting the year on track to be a record year in terms of M&A activity.
So it's true that the number of public companies in the US has declined since the '90s, but rest assured that the compromise has been more valuable IPOs and deals.
