While medicines are available behind a counter in Todos Santos, they do not require a prescription. (Image: Kathryn Reed)
I'm not sure a well-stocked medicine chest (do people even call it that anymore?) equals an ounce of prevention. Still, I'm ready for almost anything.
Mexico and the United States are polar opposites when it comes to dealing with pharmaceutical drugs. I didn't need a prescription for anything I bought in Mexico. Although I had a script from the doctor to beMay bitten by a dog, this was really to tell the pharmacist what I needed - not permission to have the drug.
After checking with my sister Pam, a nurse, she told me to get another antibiotic. No problem. The pharmacy sold me what I requested.
In the spring, one of my sisters wanted prednisone. Again, no problem, except that you have to go to more than one pharmacy. A friend flew it back to the US. Customs didn't care. Rules for importing medications into the US include: keep in original packaging, declaration, quantity for personal use only (ie no sale of the medication), and a doctor's certificate or actual prescription showing that the medication was used be under medical supervision. Apparently they didn't ask for the latter.
Many pharmacies in Mexico advertise outside what is available inside. (Image: Kathryn Reed)
It's not just what people in the US think of as prescription drugs available in Mexican pharmacies. They also have sunscreen, nail polish remover, and other items that a US pharmacy would have on the shelves. Anti-itch cream for mosquito bites is probably what I will buy most often. My usual over the counter purchases in the US were Advil and Excedrin Migraine. I know I can get the former at Costco. I guess I could get some sort of migraine medication at a pharmacy in Todos Santos or maybe one of the larger grocery stores in Cabo. Luckily no headaches since last August.
I know six pharmacies in Todos Santos. This applies to a city with 6,000 inhabitants. It's obvious they're trying to lure tourists in with signs saying they speak English and outside walls listing what's available. NPR reports, “The U.S. government estimates that nearly 1 million people travel to Mexico each year in California alone for healthcare, including to purchase prescription drugs. And between 150,000 and 320,000 Americans cite healthcare as a reason for traveling abroad each year. Cost savings are the most frequently cited reason.”
Aside from being able to buy contraceptives, Viagra, antibiotics and other medications without being looked after by a doctor, people in Mexico will spend a lot less. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development says individuals in the United States spend the most on retail drugs per year compared to people in any other country - $1,200. According to Reuters, “U.S. Prices for the 20 best selling medicines in the world are on average three times higher than in the UK.”
This all got me wondering if maybe I should load up on some meds in Mexico even though I don't take a lot of meds. I asked Pam what medicines would be good to have on hand. She sent me a list: Zithromax (Z-Pack), Keflex (Cephalexin), Prednisone, Diflucan, Macrobid, and Cipro. I showed the list to the pharmacist and he invited me. You were out of Macrobid. I also bought two tubes of pain relief cream similar to what my friend Sue had left. She had the prescription for an ankle injury. I kept it for my aching wounds. I spent about $80 on everything. In a way, that seems like a lot of money for someone who doesn't do a lot of drugs. On the other hand, I know it was a fraction of what I would have paid in the US under my last health plan. Now I just have to figure out what to take when, or hope I never really need what's in the medicine cabinet.

Very interesting Kae. I will be passing this on to my nurse practitioner daughter Sherry as she will be intrigued by your findings in Mexico. Maybe a detour south of the border to fill up is worth it, right?

Hello Kae,
Everything you say is true. My biggest concern is that antibiotics are being used indiscriminately, increasing the chances for bacteria to evolve and mutate into more resistant strains. This is a huge problem and has been with me since my days at dental school.
Your article about our four-legged friends reminded me of how they controlled the dog population in Bahia de Los Angeles. During one of the Flying Samaritans' monthly visits, dead dogs were everywhere. I inquired as to why and was told that they control the canine population in such a way.
poison. It made me sick.
Don't forget to remind us when you will be in SLT with your book. Thanks,
Ken

Go to pain management. They have more leeway than regular Dr.'s. Every single disc in my spinal cord has ruptured. I had a bulging disc that caused me to fall often. I got the epidural and when it wore off the needle was worse than ever. After that I refused the epidural. Then they gave me the painkillers. They are pain management, they are there to stop pain. However, if you don't follow the regular instructions and take more than they dictate, the government ties your hands. Doctors these days are scared, really scared. Unless it's a pain management doctor or psychiatrist (they don't give painkillers), you won't be able to get help. The government's hands are tied. It gets worse. All these young Drs who come into their own practice from residency have it drilled into them not to prescribe Percocet or anything like that. Forget Xanax. I have a package to fill out. The first page was printed in tall font, roman type, and bold. I don't prescribe Xanax. I have panic disorder and I need it. Why would anyone go to a psychiatrist who can't or won't help.

Rose, Benzodiazepines are prescribed for anxiety or as a sleep aid. These include diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam, and clonazepam. They are commonly referred to as benzos, or tranquilizers, and well-known brand names include Valium, Ativan, and Xanax.
Jordan Peterson almost died from withdrawal symptoms from prescription benzodiazepines. They are intended for very short-term use only. I hope you will research it. I'm not saying you don't need them, but I was horrified to read what Peterson went through.

I'm trying to find out if a drug I'm taking is available in Mexico. Coated mesalamine 1.2 grams per tablet. In the US, the cheapest price I can get is $2200 for 360 tabs.
I think I really need to find a list of drugs available in Mexico. Most online searches will lead you to online pharmacies that are set up to sell common medications.

This painkiller thing is crazy. People who make all these rules have nothing to do with real pain, if they did they would have a different story or different rules, god bless those in pain not a good way to live their lives

Our ex-son-in-law has degenerative disc disease.
Doctors said they could insert bars, but it would go from his neck to his tailbone.
So it was painkillers for a few years, then he decided to give it up.
As the kids have shared Idk how he is doing I wish him all the best though.
He inherited that from his mother. His sister also has the problem.

There is a drug here called Lomitil, which is an antidiarrheal. Here in Tulum, you can shop as much as you like at a major supermarket or at Costco. In the US, it requires a prescription and is considered a “controlled substance.” So when you pick it up you have to show ID!
